We’ve started work on the early warning system (EWS), but there’s a long way to go before it’s up and running. Our priority right now is to survey all the work that’s been done on genocide prevention and synthesize it into a working system. The biggest challenge at the moment is to sift through the huge amount of literature on early warning and pick out the elements that fit into the Sentinel Project.

Various scholars like Barbara Harff, Ted Gurr, Helen Fein, Gregory Stanton, Florence Mazian, and Benjamin Valentino have all created models of genocidal risk factors and development. Each one has their own unique interpretations though, so we’re identifying all of their strengths before building our own EWS on this theoretical foundation.
