Communications Director

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Director will oversee all aspects of the Sentinel Project’s external communications, including website updates, newsletters, social media, blog posts, and media outreach. This is presently an unpaid, primarily “virtual” role, although the successful candidate will help the Sentinel Project grow to the point where this role is salaried and based from physical office space in Toronto, Canada. This will require approximately five hours per week, as well as responsiveness to email outside of those five hours.

What you’ll do:

  • Create and manage a real-time, collaborative editorial calendar
  • Write blog posts, press releases, and other content for the Sentinel Project website
  • Create and send a monthly newsletter to our existing subscriber base, amalgamating content from various activities in the organizations, and track audience engagement
  • Post to, and interact on, our current social media channels, and create a monthly analysis of our most successful posts
  • Pitch story ideas to reporters and manage media outreach efforts through a real-time media tracking spreadsheet and / or customer relationship management (CRM) system
  • Oversee writers and other volunteers in the communications department, ensuring high editorial quality and brand consistency
  • Participate, via email or voice calls, in discussions relating to the organization’s communications strategy

What you’ll need:

  • Strong written communication skills, demonstrated in your cover letter and links to samples of your work
  • Ability to create and edit content in WordPress, MailChimp, and other online publishing platforms
  • Comfortable using Google Apps, especially Google Drive / Docs
  • Proficiency with social media, including social media analytics
  • Ability to manage workflows using CRMs, databases, spreadsheets, task management tools, and other similar technologies
  • Passionate about the symbiotic relationship between people and technology in conflict areas

Your experience should include:

  • 2+ years performing communications in either the for-profit or non-profit sector
  • Plenty of experience writing thoughtful, detailed articles or blog posts about complex, nuanced subjects
  • Some prior volunteer experience for a cause you support

Nice to have:

  • Local to Toronto, Canada, and available for occasional face-to-face meetings
  • Experience specifically overseeing communications for a non-profit organization like us
