On 28 October 2010, the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide hosted an event about the role of hate speech in the genocidal process. Guests at the talk, entitled “Dangerous Speech on the Road to Genocide,” saw Professor Susan Benesch of the World Policy Institute discuss what makes certain types of speech more likely than others to incite genocide. Professor Benesch also explored the difficult conflict between the dissemination of hate speech, incitement to genocide, and the right to free speech. Even more importantly for the Sentinel Project, she also discussed how monitoring dangerous speech can play an important role in the early warning of genocide.
